NT Scan Demystified

NT stands for nuchal translucency. In simpler words it is the fluid behind the baby’s neck seen in every baby. It’s measurement gained importance as a marker for Down’s syndrome. Therefore, the sonography used to measure it, is called the NT scan. But NT scan does much more than just measure NT!

This scan is to be offered to every expecting mother irrespective of their age or prior history. It can be done only between 11-13.6 weeks of the pregnancy. Therefore, care should be taken that one does not miss this crucial scan. The baby is seen in great details to look for genetic problems. The already developed heart, spine, kidneys etc are also screened. This is usually coupled with a blood test called dual marker. Also, some maternal parameters like blood pressure and blood supply to the uterus are checked.

This greatly helps obstetrician in planning the further pregnancy care as a whole. Majority of women and babies will be grouped

into a “low-risk” category and will need routine pregnancy care. A few mothers and babies will be highlighted as “high risk” and will need specialised care including certain additional tests. Thus, NT scan forms the foundation for further pregnancy care. Remember caring for your unborn child is crucial as you are a mother long before child birth!!
