Fetal Blood Sampling

Fetal Blood Sampling, also known as Cordocentesis or Percutaneous Umbilical Blood Sampling (PUBS), is an advanced invasive fetal diagnostic procedure used to directly obtain a blood sample from the fetus for detailed evaluation of genetic, hematological, and infectious conditions.

What Is Fetal Blood Sampling?

Fetal Blood Sampling is a specialized procedure in which a small amount of blood is drawn from the umbilical cord of the fetus under continuous high-resolution ultrasound guidance. This test provides rapid and highly accurate information about the baby's blood and genetic status.

When Is Fetal Blood Sampling Advised?

  • To diagnose suspected fetal anemia - as a part of a planned intra-uterine transfusion. Rarely done as a standalone test for fetal anemia
  • To confirm chromosomal abnormalities detected on screening
  • To evaluate fetal infections such as TORCH infections
  • To assess platelet disorders or blood group incompatibility

How Is the Procedure Performed?

The procedure is performed under continuous ultrasound guidance. A very fine needle is inserted through the mother’s abdominal wall into the umbilical cord, and a small sample of fetal blood is collected. The procedure usually takes only a few minutes and is done with extreme precision.

At What Gestation Is It Performed?

Fetal Blood Sampling is typically performed after 18 weeks of pregnancy when the umbilical cord is well developed and safely accessible.

Is Hospital Admission Required?

The procedure is usually performed as a Day Care procedure. The mother is observed for a few hours afterward and may go home the same day if stable.

What Conditions Can Be Diagnosed?

  • Severe fetal anemia and Rh isoimmunization
  • Genetic and chromosomal disorders
  • Fetal infections
  • Blood clotting and platelet disorders
  • Metabolic conditions

What Are the Benefits of Fetal Blood Sampling?

  • Provides direct and highly accurate fetal diagnosis
  • Allows rapid test results
  • Helps guide immediate fetal treatment if required
  • Assists in precise pregnancy management decisions

What Are the Risks Involved?

As an invasive procedure, cordocentesis carries a small risk of miscarriage, fetal bleeding, infection, or preterm labor. However, when performed by an experienced fetal medicine specialist under strict ultrasound guidance, the risks are significantly minimized.

Post-Procedure Care and Follow-Up

After the procedure, the fetal heartbeat is monitored and follow-up ultrasounds are advised to ensure fetal well-being. Rest and medications may be recommended based on individual clinical conditions.
