Early Pregnancy Scan
The Early Pregnancy Scan is an important ultrasound examination performed in the first few weeks of pregnancy. It provides reliable confirmation of pregnancy, ensures the baby is developing in the correct location, and helps establish accurate dates. Under the expertise of Dr. Ashwini Rathi, this scan offers both medical reassurance and emotional comfort during the earliest stages of pregnancy.
Why is an Early Pregnancy Scan done?
This scan is performed to confirm that the pregnancy is developing normally within the uterus and not outside it (ectopic pregnancy). It also confirms fetal viability by detecting the baby’s heartbeat and helps assess early pregnancy-related concerns such as pain or bleeding.
When should the scan be done?
The Early Pregnancy Scan is usually performed between 6 to 9 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, important structures like the gestational sac, yolk sac, and fetal heartbeat can be clearly seen.
What does the scan assess?
- Confirmation of pregnancy within the uterus
- Detection of fetal heartbeat
- Number of embryos (single or multiple pregnancy)
- Accurate dating of pregnancy
- Assessment of uterus and ovaries
- Early detection of ectopic or abnormal pregnancy
How is the scan performed?
The scan may be performed either abdominally or by a transvaginal approach, depending on the stage of pregnancy and visibility. The transvaginal scan provides clearer images in very early pregnancy and is safe for both mother and baby.
The procedure is painless and usually takes about 10–15 minutes.
Is the scan safe?
Ultrasound has been used safely in pregnancy for many decades. There is no radiation exposure, and it does not harm the developing baby. Dr. Ashwini Rathi follows the ALARA principle to ensure the lowest safe exposure while maintaining diagnostic accuracy.
What can and cannot be detected at this stage?
At this early stage, the main focus is on confirming a healthy, viable pregnancy. Structural abnormalities are usually not assessed at this time and are evaluated later at the nuchal translucency scan and anomaly scan.
However, early indicators of abnormal pregnancy, threatened miscarriage, or ectopic pregnancy can often be detected.
Understanding your results
A normal early pregnancy scan provides reassurance that the pregnancy is developing at the right pace. If any concern is detected, appropriate follow-up scans, supportive treatment, or further investigations will be advised promptly.
Dr. Ashwini Rathi personally reviews each scan to ensure accurate interpretation and provides clear guidance for the next steps in your pregnancy care.
When should you seek urgent scanning?
- Severe abdominal pain in early pregnancy
- Vaginal bleeding
- Previous history of ectopic pregnancy
- Assisted conception pregnancies
- Uncertain last menstrual period
An early pregnancy scan offers reassurance, clarity, and a strong foundation for continued antenatal care under expert fetal medicine supervision.
